AUI-S, Unique Teaching &Learning Institution in Iraq \ Kurdistan-Sulaimani

By Mahdi Abdullah Murad
“About a month ago, while traveling in northern Iraq, I happened to visit in the same afternoon what my co-traveler Reuel Gerecht called “the best thing I’ve seen in the Middle East in 25 years,” as well as traces of the worst thing that happened there over the same period of time. Those two things are, respectively, the American University of Iraq at Sulaimani and the memorial erected in Halabja, where some 5,000 Kurds were killed with chemical weapons.” ABE GREENWALD
While backing what Mr. Greenwald says in his article, I would like to added my feeling about AUI-S.

The American University of Iraq-Sulaimani (AUI-S) is a highlighted learning institution for it provides a high standard system of education that is completely different from the Iraqi system of curriculum, and it introduces the foolproof American System of Education. Since the AUI-S is a unique university as compared with the other Iraqi and Kurdistan Universities, almost all of the students in Iraq are dreaming to be a part of this university. When you enter the AUI-S, you feel like you are walking and studying at one of the U.S universities. You can see students and staff members in all of the different parts in Iraq. AUI-S is a university that is combined the students in all of the Iraqi nations without any differences. There are no differences between Arab, Kurd, or other Iraqi nations; they all behave like one family. If you walk to the classes once, you’ll see how much the students are enthusiastic to learn. Moreover, for the AUI-S is a place where is combined the students in almost all of the Iraqi parts, you’ll never forget the beautiful moments that you spend during the class. You will see how nice when the students debate about different topics. You will hear different ideas for there are students with different ideas. Each student has his or her own ideas throw the knowledge that he or she experienced via his or her culture. For example, if the students debate marriage customs, you will be taught several customs because there are always students in all of the Iraqi nations in one class, and everyone will express his idea and explain the customs of his culture. So, you’ll never get bored during the classes.

The instructors are very experienced, knowledgeable, and respectful. They are vey polite and friendly with the students. They will never get enough from answering the student’s questions. Any time, the students can go to their offices and ask about whatever that they have comment about. The first word you will hear from the teachers and the professors is that hello sister, brother, or friend. There is no red line between the professors and the students. The professors are very humble toward the students. Whenever two students stand together around the campus, the third person is one of the professors or instructors who warm the conversation. If you once visit the AUI-S, you’ll understand how much the professors are happy and comfortable with the students. They always describe the students as, “the reason teachers teach.” They give a hug to the students when they meet them around the campus, and they ask bout their studies. The professors always welcome the students to their offices in order to deal with the student’s problems and give them advice concerning any obstacles that they face.

Moreover, AUI-S is a private university, yet the numbers of those students who have scholarship are more than those who pay for their study. Furthermore, the AUI-S policy facilitates ways for those students whom their families can’t pay to study by providing work studies within the AUI-S, such as library, reception, computer labs, copy rooms, and writing, reading, and speaking centers. The students are required to work after their classes about 12 hours per week instead of paying the requirement sum for their tuition. The work study is just something that the AUI-S provides to help the students continue with their study, and it is very easy job because it doesn’t require hard work, and the students face no problem with their work for they work after the classes. Many of them use that time to do their homework, read books, and using computers. Therefore, those who have scholarship and are not eligible to get that work feel jealous about those who have work studies because they find the work studies as very beneficial to improve language and develop their skills in the ground that they interested in such as language skills, computer skills, and the other fields.

More to the point after AUI-S was accredited by The American Academy for Liberal Education, it gives a chance to the AUI-S students to get an international certification. Also, it gives a chance to the AUI-S students to be the transfer students and be part of the U.S Universities. Accreditation shows the high standard of teaching and learning at the AUI-S, and indicates that the AUI-S members are doing what needs to be done in what and how the teachers teach and the students learn. Furthermore, accreditation can give the students more confidence about their future as they are studying at the legitimate and reputable university.

I would say that what allowed this to happen was the high degree of teaching and learning that the evaluators saw while here. That plus the extensive evidence we presented to show that the administrative side of the University met expectations in terms of running a sound and fiscally responsible operation. I understand that the evaluators came away quite impressed! said Roger Gayer, who is the assistance professor at the AUI-S.

John Agresto, the AUI-S provost, assured that accreditation would facilitate the ways for the students to be transfer students.

“Having accreditation not only means that we are respected in the US as an equal intuition of higher education,” he said. “But it should also make it easier for our students to transfer our credits to American undergraduate universities if they want to study in America. It also makes it easier for students to apply and be accepted for post-graduate study in the US. Every university in America is independent and can set its own rules for whom it accepts and on which terms, but our being accredited makes it much easier for them to accept us. We are now on an equal status with them.”

Therefore, what we can say about the AUI-S is that it is just a kind of paradise for the Iraqi students for it is the only way that guides them in order to be familiar with a high standard of learning and teaching, and it introduces a complete western system of education.

Finally, I, as one of the AUI-S students, encourage students in every parts of Iraq and the neighbor countries to apply for the AUI-S in order that be familiar with the high standard of teaching and learning. I strongly recommend you guys to join AUI-S and be a part of it in order to provide very good future for yourselves in the future. Guys! I love you and Iraq, as my country, so I want all to join our hands and gather together join our efforts to rebuild Iraq. In order to be succeeded in that rebuilding, we need to find the best way. For the AUI-S is the University that is combined the students in almost all of the Iraqi areas, I don’t think there will be other ways better than the AUI-S because AUI-S can provide the key success for that which is peace. Via peace, we can do whatever we want and dream about. We can change the Iraqi situation very soon. We should think about what Iraq needs to be rebuilt. For sure, it needs young and professional leaders, business people, computer scientists, and professional managers. AUI-S is a university that provides all of these fields to help us be one of those people. So, let’s all come together at the AUI-S, start doing what Iraq and our future needs, and overthrow those who stop Iraq and its education from being improved. Guys! I am telling you that you can absolutely take the AUI-S for grantee about anything you are dreaming about to be in the future. All I acn say for now is that the AUI-S is just a pardise for its students for it introduces the high standard of teaching and learning in the Middle East generally, especially in Iraq.
