To Jackie Spinner: Goodbye my lovely adviser

Jackie and I
 by Mahdi Abdullah

Jackie Spinner, who was the first AUIS Voice Adviser, left AUI-S for good on Sep 1,2010. Spinner came to AUI-S last year and started working as an Adviser for the AUIS Voice Newspaper, which is the first Independent University Student Newspaper in Iraq. Although she worked at AUI-S for less than one year, Spinner could help so many AUI-S students to be professional journalists. She started a great project in the development of the media at AUI-S.

I don’t know how to choose my words to start expressing my feeling about your leaving. All I can say is that whenever any of my friends have left and separated with me, I usually told them that I was happy as a part and sad in another part. Departure was a reason that always makes me sad, and I was sometimes happy about leaving some of my friends because they might have benefit from their leaving. I will never tell you I am happy about your leaving dear Jackie, and all I say is that I am so sad about your leaving. I will never forget those days when I work with you. It will just be impossible for me to forget you because you were a person who helped me to get to the top from zero. You helped me take a huge step toward one of my best dreams, which was being a journalist. You tried an extraordinary with me to achieve one of my essential goals. When you first came to AUI-S and started teaching us journalism, I didn’t know many things about it. I can say I didn’t know even to organize a report in English. I will never forget that days when you; regardless of your too much work at AUI-S, always opened your door toward me to teach me the ways of being a professional journalist. I will always remember those wonderful words you have told me since the first moment when I knew you till you left. I will never forget those nice conversations that we had almost every day at the school. I am telling you that whatever position that I got and will get in the future is because of you. You were my first and the best adviser to get what I achieved now. You were the first person that helped me a lot to find my skills in the ground of the journalism. You were my first teacher who told me, “Mahdi…you are the best reporter, and you are going to be a professional journalist.” You really encouraged me by these kind words and advice to try the best to be who I am now. You say hello to me as a reporter who doesn’t know almost anything about journalism, but you bit me your farewell when I got to be the Editor-In-Chief, which means that you start with me in zero, but left me in the top. Therefore, whatever position I have now and will get in the future, it will be just because of you.

Moreover, Dear Jackie, you helped me to be happy more than the happiest man in the world by presenting your last gift and these words that you wrote for me. For sure, this gift will be counted as one of the best gifts I have ever received; especially what you wrote for me will be the best words that always pushed me forward.
“For Mahdi….You are a great journalist already. Keep pushing yourself to be better. Good luck to you- although it’s really not about luck. You know that.” Jackie Spinner, Voice Adviser.

I don’t know how to end my writing. I will never say goodbye because I promise to always remember you and pretend that person who will replace you as Jackie Spinner. So, my best farewell to you is SEE YOU SOON insha allah!

Respectfully,
Mahdi A. Murad
